When will the inactive handles be released?

X has not announced a date yet, but it's expected to be in the next few months.

Status of your handle

Your dashboard will show your monitored handles along with their status. The status can be one of the following:

Available

The handle is available for you to register. If you're unable to register a handle that's marked as "Available", it's likely that someone else has registered it very recently.

Starting

We will start monitoring the handle in the next few hours. This status is only temporary and will change shortly.

Monitoring

We're monitoring the X API for any changes, and will notify you when the handle is released.

Monitoring: Banned word

X has a long list of banned words. If your desired handle contains one of them, X currently won't allow you to register it. It's currently unclear why certain words are banned while they seem perfectly reasonable and might even have associated active handles. We'll continue to monitor your desired handle, and notify you if it becomes available.

Monitoring: Username too short

X does not allow new registrations of handles that are 5 characters or less. We'll continue to monitor your desired handle, and notify you if it becomes available.
